Piccolingo Day of Languages

Over 50 parents and early years staff attended Piccolingo: Day of Languages at St Thomas of Aquins High School on Wed 29th September.  The event had been organised by Edinburgh City Council, Bilingualism Matters, Scottish CILT, Edinburgh EAL Service and Edinburgh Beltane, with the support of different Consulates, to celebrate early language learning, and to promote the resources and opportunities available to support early language learning.

Antonella Sorace, from Bilingualism Matters, gave a short talk.  She was joined by a parent, who shared her experiences of bringing a child up bilingually, and by Tessa Humby from the EAL service at Edinburgh City Council and Barbara Robertson from Grassmarket Nursery. Children from Tollcross Nursery performed two songs in Gaelic.

Fun activities in Italian and French were available for children attending the event.
Everyone enjoyed delicious catering, generously provided by the Consulates – the German Consulate provided wine and pretzels, the Italian Consulate provided pizza and sandwiches, and the Institut Français d'Ecosse provided croissants. An exhibition area displayed resources and promoted opportunities.

Exhibitors included:
  • Spanish Education Office (Consejería de Educación)
  • Grassmarket Nursery
  • British Council
  • Scottish CILT
  • Edinburgh City Council – EAL Service
  • Bilingualism Matters
  • Craigmillar Books for Babies
  • German Consulate / Goethe Institut
  • Institut Français d'Ecosse
  • Edinburgh City Council –  CEC Information and Learning Resources
  • Italian Consulate
  • Tollcross Nursery
The event was really successful, and everyone involved is looking forward to Piccolingo: Languages in Action on 10th November, when early years settings across Edinburgh will be holding events of their own to celebrate languages.
